MODULE ONE: INTRODUCTION TO DIFFERENT SKIN LAYERS
-
3• Skin Composition
The skin is the body's largest organ. It covers the entire body. It serves as a protective shield against heat, light, injury, and infection. Your skin takes on different thickness, color, and texture all over your body. For example, your head contains more hair follicles than anywhere else. But the soles of your feet have none. In addition, the soles of your feet and the palms of your hands are much thicker than skin on other areas of your body.
The skin also:
· Regulates body temperature
· Stores water and fat
· Is a sensory organ
· Prevents water loss
· Prevents entry of bacteria
· Acts as a barrier between the organism and its environment
· Helps to make vitamin D when exposed to the sun
-
4• Different skin types
The type of skin you have depends on the amount of water and oil in your skin. If these are out of balance your skin will suffer. So for example, if your skin has too much oil you may be more prone to acne outbreaks, and your skin will appear shiny.skincare products designed for oilly skin are mostly oil free, and may have ingredients designed to help rebalance the level of oil in your skin

5• PIGMENTARY DISORDER -HYPERPIGMENTATION AND MELASMA
Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a skin disorder that appears as tan, brown or purple tone in skin after damage, irritation or trauma. It can result in the over-production of melanin or irregular dispersion of pigment after cutaneous inflammation.
When this occurs in the epidermis, the production of melanin that surrounds the keratinocytes is increased, which is believed to stimulate mediators and reactive oxygen species that are known actors in the inflammatory process.
In some cases, PIH can affect the dermis due to inflammation-induced damage to basal keratinocytes. This, in turn, releases an excess of melanin; this type of PIH will often present as a blue-gray appearance to the skin. Instances of skin conditions that can result in PIH include psoriasis, infection, allergic reaction, atopic dermatitis, burns and acne.

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Cosmeceuticals are skincare products designed to enhance skin health, repair damage and improve skin condition. This is because it contains high concentrations of active ingredients.in this module we are going to learn more about the differences between cosmetics and Cosmeceuticals metics products can only affect the skin's surface and therefore cannot be used to cure any underlying medical conditions. It can't penetrate the skin because it doesn't have the right molecular weight to cross the dermal-epidermal junction.
